Whether you are moving into a new home or breathing life into an existing space, decorating your home can be a daunting task at the best of times. There are so many factors to take into consideration … the space which you are decorating, it’s purpose, style, colour palette and so much more. You might even be wondering if a neon sign could complement your decorating ideas.
Thinking about adding a neon sign to your home
Well, we have put together this short blog to help you realise that no home is complete without a bespoke neon sign to signal to any potential visitors that the occupants of that home, are unique people with an exceptional sense of style.
Having a neon sign in your home can help you recreate the glitz and glamour of the bright lights of Las Vegas in your indoor bar area or add that smoky, sullen, moodiness of your favourite jazz cafe to your living room. You might even want to add a certain je ne sais quoi to your bedroom to help you create a sexy mood which offers you the most flattering lighting.
Deciding what you want
Here at Capital Graffiti, we have seen an increase in people approaching us for bespoke neon signs for their homes. Each neon sign is handmade and unique which appeals to a growing trend of people who are looking for ways to express their individuality rather than conform to the ‘mainstream’ design and decorating ideas. Our glassblower will work with you to come up with the best design for the space you are decorating and help you create the mood and effect which you desire. The possibilities of what we can create together are endless.
The inspiration for a neon sign can come from literally anywhere – Lyrics from your favourite song, a quote or poem which has a special significance, names and nicknames, nature, geography, etc. All we have to do is to harvest those inspirations and incorporate them into a design for your sign.
Neon comes in approximately 26 colours for you to choose from.
Our glassblower and yourself will work together to design a bespoke sign for you. The glassblower will help you understand what can and cannot be done with neon, will support you to think about where to install your sign and will confirm the delivery date and other details.
You will have the opportunity to see the artwork of your final design before your neon sign is made and delivered.
Using neon signs in your home
There are a couple of factors to consider when thinking about adding a neon sign to your home:
Safe Space – Since neon is made from long glass tubes, it can be as fragile as any other glass item in your home. Therefore, careful consideration needs to be given to the design of the sign as well as where a neon sign is installed. Also, due to the fact that each neon sign is bespoke made, there are no spare parts which are kept in stock to be used at a later time. Once broken, neon units need to be removed and taken to our factory for repairs by a professional glassblower. This might incur additional costs depending on the situation.
It is best to choose a safe space for your neon sign to be installed to prevent any unfortunate accidents. Also, protective casings (many of which are optically clear) could be incorporated into your design to add additional protection to your neon sign. However, our glassblower will work with you to find the best solution for you.
- Electrical Socket – Your neon sign needs electricity and you need to keep the proximity of the nearest electrical socket in consideration when deciding where you want your sign.
Installing or moving electrical sockets does not fall within the services that we provide and a qualified electrician would be required to carry out this work. However, each neon sign is fitted with an electrical cord and 3 point UK plug.
Maintenance – Neon signs do not require a lot of maintenance which is what makes them even more appealing for home-usage. With this said, it is important to note that the gas inside the neon units may fade over many years with daily usage and it might need to be replaced approximately every 20 years to keep the colours of your sign crisp and bright.
